ANARCHY IN THE UK?
The UK has been a fascinating macro case study for politics and economics recently. The country faces increasing social tension over mass immigration, a rising cost of living, the highest tax burden since World War II, and the least popular government in almost 50 years.
It’s fair to say the people of the UK are some of the least satisfied right now in the Western world. This year, the leader of the opposition, Kemi Badenoch, warned the UK could be forced to go “cap in hand” to the IMF (International Monetary Fund) if the government failed to deliver a convincing growth strategy. So, what can the astrology reveal about the currency underpinning it all, the British Pound Sterling?
THE ASTROLOGY OF THE POUND STERLING
First, we need to establish solid birth data for the currency, both through historical research and backtesting.
There are two charts which equally compete for legitimacy. One chart aligns with the founding of the Bank of England, as it is the central institution responsible for issuing and managing the currency. This chart is the “birth” of the institutional framework ruling the pound, analogous to the US Mint’s Coinage Act for the USD. Professionals such as Bill Meridian and Raymond Merriman often use central bank interventions for currency analysis. That gives us the following data:
27th July, 1694, Noon, London, England
But there’s also a strong case for the 1st January 1801. This date marks when the Acts of Union in 1800 took place, uniting the Kingdom of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. This is considering the “birth” of the modern UK.
To test which chart resonated more, I did some quick transit research with the key modern dates most impacting the British Pound Sterling.
EVENT 1: THE 1976 IMF CRISIS
The 1976 IMF crisis saw the UK government requesting a then‑record 3.9 billion‑dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund in order to stabilise the pound and reassure financial markets.
Using the 1694 GBP chart, around June 1976, we do see Saturn, the planet of negativity and restriction, directly conjunct the natal Pluto of this chart, representing power and wealth. So there’s a classic direct symbolism for the constriction of power and wealth. Pluto is also associated with the planet of crisis. It’s also worth noting that the previous year, July 1975, saw transiting Pluto conjoin the natal Moon at 7 Libra- truly a once-in-a-lifetime event, which gives some traction for using this chart.
Transiting Uranus, which represents shocks, upheavals, surprise moves and the unexpected, was transiting in the early degrees of the 2nd house - related to finances and money, and it was squaring the natal Sun within 1 degree. This really represents an ongoing negative shock to the “life force” of the pound.
This crisis peaked after a very sharp one-day fall in the value of the pound on 28th September 1976, which then pushed the Labour government to seek a standby loan from the IMF.
What I notice with this 28th September transit chart is the wide conjunction of Venus, Rahu and Uranus in the 2nd house of Scorpio. If Venus is money, Rahu is shocks, obstacles and karmic reckonings, and Uranus is also shocks, surprises, volatility, and the 2nd house is everyday money, we see this is quite a potent chart for intense volatility and reckoning for the currency on the very day that the huge drop in the value of the pound happened. Also notice how Uranus is precisely square the natal Jupiter and Sun!
In Vedic Astrology, the Sun is archetypally viewed as “the King” and the ruler of the kingdom. Jupiter is associated with “the treasury” of the kingdom. So Jupiter and Sun both being very tightly squared by Uranus, the revolutionary, shocking and unexpected planet, is a very apt image for this chaotic day in the United Kingdom.
Let’s compare this date with the January 1st 1801 chart, which is less about the currency itself, and more about the founding of the Modern United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
In this chart, for June 1976, we do see Ketu conjoining the natal Mars in the 2nd house around this time. As Ketu represents reduction, the 2nd house represents everyday money, and Mars can relate to action, aggression and value, it holds good archetypal imagery. But the Mars image doesn’t create as much of a unique hit of crisis as having the natal Saturn conjoin the natal Pluto as per our other chart.
In fact, Uranus in the 8th was trine Pluto in the 12th; whilst this is a highly energetic and revolutionary aspect, it leans more positive in traditional astrological interpretation.
Let’s fast forward to that 28th September 1976 currency drop moment,
In the 1801 chart, we do see some potent negative aspects like transiting Pluto squaring the Sun within 1 degree, but there are also some very positive ones that we wouldn’t expect for a currency crash - for example, Jupiter in Trine to Uranus, Jupiter in Sextile to Jupiter and Venus in Trine to Pluto.
For me, this is giving weight towards the 1694 chart. Let’s take a look at another great crisis in the British pound’s history - Black Wednesday.
EVENT 2: BLACK WEDNESDAY
Black Wednesday took place in the UK on 16 September 1992, when the government was forced to pull the pound out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM). It was a dramatic day because currency traders launched a massive speculative attack on the pound, believing it was really worth less than the Deutschmark. Traders borrowed huge amounts of pounds and immediately sold them for stronger currencies. Once the pound was forced to devalue, they could buy pounds back much more cheaply, repay what they had borrowed, and keep the difference as profit.
The Bank of England tried to defend the currency by briefly hiking interest rates from 10% to a planned 15%, making it very expensive to borrow pounds, but by the evening, they admitted defeat, suspended ERM membership, and allowed the pound to devalue. This led to a sharp fall in the value of the pound of about 10–15% in the following days, and around 25% against the dollar over the subsequent weeks. For the average person, anything priced in foreign currency instantly became about 15% more expensive.
Let’s look at our 1694 chart relative to that event.
There was a conjunction of Sun, Jupiter and Mercury at 24 Virgo, right over the natal Mars and opposing the natal Neptune. A debilitated Mars is conjunct the natal Ketu at 2 Cancer.
The Sun, in this case, is shining a light on an issue, Mercury is the classic planet of trade, and Jupiter opposing Neptune speaks to over-expansion, overvaluation, and struggles with determining the clear value of something. If Jupiter is expansion and faith, Neptune is fantasy, so the opposition is big faith vs big fantasy, but a sense of self-deception, overpromising, or bubbles.
We can translate the astrology as “There is a major issue and tension relating to the true value of this thing, trading is deceptive and shady, there is a confidence issue, and aggressive losses are possible.”
Compare this to the 1801 UK Founding Chart on the same day:
Neptune and Uranus are in an interesting wide conjunction over the natal Sun, but it’s within 4 degrees, and I prefer a much tighter orb of 1 or 2 degrees when dealing with outer planets because they are simply related to much longer periods of time.
Notice how the Jupiter, Mercury and Sun conjunction is now in a positive sextile to the natal Moon, but is squaring natal Lilith in the 3rd house. Saturn does square Mars in the 2nd house, but the signature here just isn’t as potent in my view at the 1694 chart. This furthers my opinion that the 1694 chart relates more strongly to the pound itself, and the 1801 chart speaks more strongly to the general politics and events of the country as a whole.
How about we compare this to one last currency devaluation moment for the British pound to lock in which chart is the most responsive, and see what the future holds for it? Let’s do the Brexit Vote of June 2016.
EVENT 3: BREXIT VOTE | JUNE 2016
The UK confirmed their exit from the European Union on the morning of Friday, 24th June 2016. GBP/USD fell from around 1.50 before the results to a low near 1.32, a drop of just over 10% at one point.
On the GBP chart for 1694, we see Venus within 2 degrees of the natal Chiron, Mercury conjoining the natal Uranus, transiting Chiron over the natal Neptune, and an interesting Jupiter-Rahu conjunction in Virgo in the 12th house.
Mercury indicates trade and is right over the natal Uranus, indicating shock and unexpected outcomes. The vote to leave the EU was definitely not expected amongst the majority of the UK population, so the price shock was equally unexpected. Venus represents money; it hits the natal Chiron, indicating a wound surrounding value. The Sun is conjunct Ketu, indicating a sense of reduction.
Compare this to the 1801 chart for the founding of the UK generally:
Venus at 10 Cancer in the 4th house of home and foundations directly opposes the natal Sun at 10 Capricorn. A sense of rejection of leadership, rejection of mainstream values, a vote for new values in relation to the “home” of the UK. Neptune, Ketu, Moon and Chiron in the 12th house of loss, foreigners, dispersion and “leaving” is heavily activated.
Most interestingly, Uranus, that slow-moving planet of change, transformation, innovation and rebellion, is directly conjunct the ascendant degree at 24 Aries. This is a once-per-84-year exact transit, so it confirms that the 1801 chart works for the UK as a whole.
Because this was primarily a political event, with a knock-on effect to the currency, we see the 1801 chart react a little better, but that’s not to say that the currency chart doesn’t also clearly indicate some sense of loss.
From analysing these 3 events, I think that the 1694 chart is the best chart for measuring the life force of the currency of the UK, the pound sterling. That being settled, how is GBP looking in 2026?
IS THE POUND IN TROUBLE IN 2026/2027?
We’ll use our confirmed 27th July, 1694, Noon, London, England chart. We’ll analyse the GBP’s Profection Year, Varshaphala, Mahadasha and upcoming key transits in 2026.
GBP | PROFECTION YEAR & VARSHAPHALA
We see that for the pound, for the year from 27th July 2025 to 27th July 2026, it is 331 years old and therefore in an 8th house profection year until 27th July 2026. This sets the background theme for the pound for the year. The 8th house is the house of crisis, change, deep psychology, investments, other people’s money, and wealth that is hidden behind the scenes. Ancient Hellenistic authors consistently link the 8th house with death, inheritances, debts, grief, and anxieties.
This indicates a year of panic, paranoia, trauma, volatility, and issues with deep behind-the-scenes money. This doesn’t signal outright destruction, but it’s certainly a year of doubts, anxieties, crisis issues, issues with money behind the scenes, and so speaks to a crisis year for the pound.
Almost every major economic house has recently downgraded the UK’s growth forecasts for 2026. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) downgraded 2026 growth from 1.9% to 1.4%. RBC is predicting growth as low as 1.1%.
The 8th house is also related to taxes. By 2026, the frozen tax thresholds will start to bite, pulling millions into higher tax bands. Taxes are causing anxiety, both strong 8th house themes.
Let’s also take a look at the Vedic Varshaphala chart, describing the results of the year for July 2025 through to July 2026.
This looks pretty good upon first glance, with an exalted Jupiter in the 10th house of career. The Sun is at 4 degrees Leo, nearly Conjunct Mercury in the 11th house. The ruler of the ascendant is Venus, placed in the 9th house. There’s equally negative sentiment on this one, too, though, with Ketu and Mars conjunct in the 12th house in Virgo. Since July 2025 the pound has been choppy but modestly firmer overall, especially against the dollar, while broadly range‑bound against the euro. So this is showing the relative strength from July 2025 onwards.
Let’s also view the Varshaphala from July 2026 to July 2027 to get a better picture.
From July 2026, this one is indicating a bit more pressure. It’s because of the Pluto-Jupiter opposition in this chart. This is occurring right around the time of the Jupiter-Pluto opposition in July 2026, which indicates major banking problems and issues related to banks. The ruler of the ascendant here is debilitated in the 12th house of loss. Rahu, a problem-causer, is at the first degree of the 6th house of health and debt issues, with Chiron, the wounded healer, marking its first punctuation point in the 8th house of crisis.
In terms of the Varshaphala, these two charts suggest that the crisis for GBP is occurring from the 2nd half of 2026 onwards and into 2027. Let’s dig deeper into that.
THE MAHADASHA OF THE POUND STERLING
As you’ll be aware, the Vedic Dasha system simply creates timestamps in a person or asset’s life like chapters in a book, and we can use the Dasha system to gain more confidence in our predictions.
Our chart for GBP is straight in the middle of a Ketu Mahadasha from 2024 to 2031. In my view, this is signalling a serious reduction and loss in value from the years 2024 through 2031. Ketu is associated with reduction, loss, dispersion, and anti-materialism, and so this isn’t a great indicator for financial strength. This is especially true because Ketu is placed in the 10th house of career and status naturally, so this isn’t a good time for the status, reputation and “career” of the GBP as we know it.
The Moon Antardasha is running from April 2026 through to November 2026. The Moon is in the 1st house in our chart, so this indicates that there will be increased attention on the “self” of the pound - attention will be paid in the media regarding the pound. The Moon represents the people, the collective, and collective stability, so expect increased attention from the media on the value of the pound, or elections and related matters from April 2026 through November 2026. The challenging Ketu pratyantardasha occurs from September 30th through October 12th, so this could be a further difficult period.
It’s also interesting to note that Ketu, the planet of reduction, has been transiting the 12th house of loss, Virgo. Virgo is highly related to working and the working class. With Ketu going through this sign, we’ve seen the working class hit, with forecasts seeing UK unemployment rising to 5.1–5.2%.
We see that this confirms our thesis that the 2nd half of 2026 could be very challenging for GBP. What future transits could confirm or deny this?
THE FUTURE OF GBP | 2026 FUTURE TRANSITS
JANUARY 2026
January starts with a classic tense signature. We see that the GBP is going through its Pluto opposition. This is a once per 124 cycle when the transiting Pluto forms an opposition with the natal Pluto. This is a real marker of intensity, crisis, evolution, culmination and a deep, uncompromising review of things for the pound sterling. Jupiter is transiting the 10th, though, offering some sense of protection in the reputation of the asset.
MARCH - APRIL 2026
Early March seems to be the start of some sort of pain point for the pound.
Pluto, now at 4 degrees Aquarius, makes its exact opposition to the natal Sun at 4 Leo. This is a really tough aspect, challenging the sense of power and authority; it’s almost as if there is a reckoning going on, and something occurs that prompts the public or the government to start talking about the behind-the-scenes economics or finances impacting the pound.
The Sun is also in the 6th house at this point, associated with health issues, debt and overcoming problematic obstacles. The transiting Sun will make a precise square to the natal Uranus on 8th March, as this Pluto opposition is in effect, so we could see some disruptive, shocking or unexpected news regarding the pound at this time.
What’s the main economic event happening in the UK in March? The Spring Budget, usually held in the first or second week of March, perfectly aligns with the astrological timing. Considering the Sun squaring Uranus on March 8th, could we see a shocking and unexpected disruption with the budget, or a budget that holds surprising factors that the public didn’t see coming?
This Pluto-Sun opposition is striking because it suggests a possible change in leadership or challenge in authority, either to the UK itself or to the value of the pound. If the markets lose faith in the March budget, we could see a mini-repeat of the Liz Truss market volatility debacle, a direct hit to the “authority” of the Pound.
By the 8th April, things start to appear a little tougher, with Pluto moving from the 4th degree of Aquarius to the 5th, where it now directly opposes the natal Jupiter at the 5th degree of Leo.
Jupiter-Pluto combinations are heavily associated with banking and finance, and this is about where I expect to see the “crisis” or “issue” with the British pound make the mainstream news. Transiting debilitated Saturn at 6 Aries directly opposes the natal Moon at 6 Libra - another tough confluence suggesting issues around early March through early April. April is, after all, the start of the financial year, so naturally we could see these issues cropping up at this time.
JULY 2026
One of the major dates of the year is the exact Jupiter-Pluto opposition in the general world astrology, which indicates banking issues. This mundane transit is actually tied to the chart of GBP, too. This occurs on the 20th July, when transiting Jupiter is at 4 Leo and transiting Pluto is at 4 Aquarius, in direct opposition.
Why is this important for GBP? 4 degrees is the natal Sun of the GBP, so Jupiter will actually be making a very “saviour-like” positive move over the natal Sun, with transit Neptune trining the Sun at this time.
I think this is indicating a “saving grace” or an emergency move, which is going to temporarily save the GBP and kick whatever structural problems are underlying it down the road. Mercury will be retrograde in the 10th house of career and status for the GBP at this time, so think of all those “re” words - restructuring, retrading, re-evaluating, returning.
This stands out as the most important date of the year for the pound, and it looks extremely volatile but with a positive outcome, as if some emergency move has been pulled to save the pound temporarily. This will actually represent another Jupiter return of the pound, so there seems to be a saving grace mechanism within the context of this highly volatile and anxious 8th house profection year.
What could this event be? For me, it’s possible that the UK government become desperate to stimulate some form of growth, and in the view of many economists, the main thing that has stifled growth in the UK has, amongst other things, been the withdrawal from the EU.
The current Brexit trade deal has a major review period in 2026. This is the UK government’s opportunity to rewrite parts of the deal. Notice how Mercury, associated with writing, communication, documents and trade, is retrograde - bringing up “re” words such as “renegotiation” “, re-writing a deal”, “re-establishing trade” or “re-aligning” with the EU.
The retrograde is also happening in the 10th house of career and status for the pound, so this is reversing the trend on the markets perception of the pound at this time - likely viewing it as a positive saviour for the value of the pound, which is also indicated by the “saviour” aspect of Jupiter transiting directly over the natal Sun at 4 degrees Leo. The timing would be uncanny. This wouldn’t be popular in the eyes of the people, but it would be popular in the eyes of the markets.
It could also be the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meeting, which is scheduled for July 30, 2026, right within the Jupiter-Pluto opposition window. Perhaps unexpected interest rate cuts happen, or emergency quantitative easing occurs to prevent an underlying crisis? These events all cover the archetypal themes of Jupiter-Pluto combinations.
AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2026
The 27th August 2026 represents another possible wounding period with transiting debilitated Mars conjoining over the natal Chiron. This is an ego hit of sorts, a value hit, a hit to confidence again, which is quite painful for the pound.
The 11th September onwards is another interesting period, with Ketu at 28 Leo conjoining the natal Mercury. This indicates a reduction in the trading or value of the pound at this time. The Sun is also transiting the 12th house of loss, emphasising these negative themes of value loss.
It’s likely that the growth of the economy continues to decline at this time, and it becomes very apparent to the markets, likely striking the value of the pound at this time.
NOVEMBER 2026
November seems to be a period of slight recovery, with the ruler of the ascendant, Venus, conjoining the exact ascendant degree of 25 Libra while Jupiter is within 2 degrees of the natal Mercury, indicating some recovery with the trading of the pound. Neptune will trine Pluto, indicating a surge in confidence, even though this may be illusory or temporary.
THE NARRATIVE OF 2026
The transit analysis for the British Pound in 2026 reveals that the year is defined by extreme volatility and a challenging push-pull dynamic, strongly confirming the background anxiety of the 8th House Profection and the Ketu Mahadasha. A temporary salvation event occurs in July, possibly in the midst of a wider banking crisis, pointing to some form of emergency restructuring or trade renegotiation at this time. This is highly confluent with the critical June 30th expiration of key Brexit trade agreements. The impacts of this event will still be felt by Q3 and Q4, and the Pound could continue its struggle into 2027.
STRATEGIC MARKET OUTLOOK
For currency traders, the Pound is structurally weak and is heading lower long-term, so we should favour betting against it. The year will be defined by three major volatility events, which you should treat as temporary opportunities. First, watch out for the March/April Crisis: the UK Budget and debt issues could hit hard.
The second major event is the July “Saviour”. Astrologically, this is a major intervention during a wider macro crisis period relating to banks and banking. It could be a temporary fix, like a new trade deal or emergency central bank action. One strategy is to Fade the News. The final phase could see a slow declining trend. You could use every piece of bad economic news (high unemployment, low GDP) that comes out in this period to confidently add to your bet against the Pound.

Brilliant research of the GBPound.
Rachel Reeves policies have destroyed growth and investment resulting in record taxes & unemployment rising. She must lower interest rates to stimulate growth which will adversely affect the pound.
May 2026 UK local election results will spook the market as Labour government confidence will be shattered.
Excellent analysis Rowan !!
